WINDED WOFFY RIDES
Team Great Britain star Tai Woffinden has vowed to take his place in the Speedway World Cup Final on Saturday night, despite suffering rib damage at King’s Lynn on Monday.
The 19-year-old crashed hard in heat 10 as he tried to round Australian racer Rory Schlein. Woffinden went into the corner with far too much speed and was thrown into the air fence.
His spill did not appear to slow him down throughout the rest of the night, though, as he picked up a superb win over fellow SGP star Chris Holder in race 19 and gave Darcy Ward a ferocious fight for third place in heat 22.
But Woffinden admits he is not 100 percent after the fall, although he has no intention of missing his big night in Vojens.
He told the Wolves official website: “I’m taking short breaths at the moment because it’s hurting me in the rib area after my crash.
“But I’ll be riding on Saturday, I’m sure. We achieved so much as a team on Monday night and I don’t want to miss Saturday.”
Team GB will take on Event One winners Poland, as well as the top two teams from Thursday night’s Race-Off at Vojens, which sees hosts Denmark meet Australia, Sweden and Russia.
While the Lions go into the SWC Final as underdogs, Woffinden sees no reason why they cannot build on their victory at the Norfolk Arena and push for the nation’s first world team title since 1989.
The Wolves skipper made his British senior debut in Vojens two years ago and hopes for another night to remember in Denmark.
He said: “We worked hard to get through and if everyone clicks, it’s a small English-like track and there is no reason why we can’t win it.
“I’ve been to Vojens before. I had race wins in the World Cup there two years ago and I know what it’s all about. The track is always nice, although it always rains every time we have a meeting there.”
