JD'S REPRIEVE
Swedish star Jonas Davidsson was delighted to make the most of his late call-up for the Speedway World Cup on Monday night, and has set his sights on the Final.
The Piraterna racer was drafted in as a replacement for Grand Prix rider Andreas Jonsson, who was suffering with muscle inflammation on his shoulder blade.
Davidsson repaid manager Peter Jansson’s faith with a huge 14-point haul, as the Swedes finished third behind Team Great Britain and Australia on 40 points at King’s Lynn.
It was a major surprise when the Motala-born man was overlooked in favour of Daniel Nermark for the initial five-man team. So Davidsson was pleased to justify his place at the Norfolk Arena.
He said: “I’m glad to show them I should have been in from the beginning. I took my second chance and it turned out to be a good meeting for me.
“I haven’t only been doing well in the World Cup. I’m having a good year in Sweden and Poland. For me, what I did was no surprise.
“It’s a shame we struggled too much as a team at the beginning and had a few problems. It’s hard to catch up in this competition, but we were good in the end and that’s what we’ll bring to Vojens.”
With Jonsson back in their ranks for the Race-Off at Vojens tonight, the Swedes will fancy their chances of winning one of the two places up for grabs for Saturday’s SWC Final.
Davidsson said: “Every team is on zero again and we have some good experience around Vojens, so why not? We will go there and try to be first or second to get ourselves into the Final.”
