World champion Chris Holder stepped up his recovery from the knee injury which ended his 2012 season by returning to the track at Kurri Kurri on Saturday.

Holder has been sidelined since he crashed hard in Poole’s Elite League Knockout Cup semi-final, second leg at Peterborough on October 25.

The 25-year-old did not require surgery, but missed Pirates’ Knockout Cup Final with Coventry and was unable to defend his Australian Championship crown earlier this month.

But the Sydneysider celebrated Australia Day by taking his first practice laps ahead of the season-opening New Zealand FIM Speedway Grand Prix in Auckland on March 23.

After taking to the track, Holder tweeted: “First ride on the speedway bike! Feels good to be back.”
