DOYLE PASSING MENTAL AND PHYSICAL TEST

Jason Doyle says he’s enjoying his racing again after overcoming the challenge of his broken foot to pull clear at the SGP summit.

World Championship leader Jason Doyle says he’s enjoying his racing again after overcoming the mental and physical challenge of his broken foot to pull clear at the SGP summit.

The Swindon skipper, who leads the Robins into their SGB Premiership play-off semi-final, first leg at Poole tonight, finished third in the IPONE German SGP in Teterow on Saturday to go 10 points clear of nearest rival Patryk Dudek.

Doyle has been one of the sport’s busiest riders of late – racing play-off meetings in Poland, Sweden and Britain, as well as going for SGP glory.

I have come off the crutches and this is much better. I can ride a motorbike without pain.

Competing with the broken foot he suffered in Torun three months ago hasn’t helped matters. The Newcastle-born racer admits constant questions about his fitness started to get to him, so he paid tribute to his SGP team for helping him get back to his best.

He said: “I have some really good people around me at the moment, who have steered me in the right direction over the last few weeks. David Haynes is one of them – my chief mechanic – and his son Sam and Johno Birks.

“It’s one of those things. Speedway can be a massive head game. I guess it just wasn’t working with certain things and having an injury.

“There were many times when people kept bringing up the injury and it started getting on top of me, people asking only that question. I guess I had to find a different approach.

“I have come off the crutches and this is much better. I can ride a motorbike without pain. After seven heats, it was a bit sore, but it’s one of those things you have to do. I’m enjoying it again and that’s the thing I wasn’t doing in the last few months.”

Doyle knows he has plenty of work to do before he can contemplate becoming Australia’s sixth speedway world champion – and the first to be crowned on home shale – at the season-closing QBE Insurance Australian SGP at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium on October 28.

Having won in Stockholm last year and reached the Torun and Melbourne finals in 2015, JD has every reason to be confident.

But the grounded 31-year-old said: “We just want to bang in as many points as we can, just edge ahead and try to be there in Melbourne. It’s a long way to go with three GPs left.

“It would be nice to go to Stockholm and do the same as I did last year. But I’m not going to count my chickens and think I’m going to score there. I know how hard it is this year. It was hard last year, but this year it has stepped up another level. We all know what happened in Torun last year. One heat and I was in hospital. So there is a long way to go. I just have to keep a level-headed approach to it.”
