GRIN RECOVERY ON TRACK

Greg Hancock hopes to be back on two wheels by Christmas, but insisted “I have the time, so I’m not going to overdo it” in his recovery bid.

Four-time world champion Greg Hancock hopes to be back on two wheels by Christmas, but insisted “I have the time, so I’m not going to overdo it” in his recovery battle.

The Californian, who has just completed a shock move to Polish Second Division club Rzeszow, saw his 2017 season ended prematurely by a freak fall on the stairs at his Swedish base, which left him with a dislocated shoulder.

It would be great to start trying to ride a little bit by Christmas time. That’s the idea. By February, I’ll be at full speed ahead. But I’m going to try to ride as soon as I can.

Hancock attempted to race on at the Adrian Flux British SGP in Cardiff on July 22, suffering further dislocations in the Welsh capital. And after a brave bid to strengthen the joint and get back on track, he was forced to admit defeat and go under the knife.

The 47-year-old is pleased with his recovery so far and hopes to begin his preparations for 2018 before this year is out.

He said: “The shoulder is recovering well and getting stronger every day. The rehab has started and I still have a couple of months of just trying to strengthen it slowly as we go.

“I have quite a lot of rotation in the arm already. I definitely don’t have full rotation yet, but it’s going pretty well. I have to take it step-by-step and not over-train it. But it’ll be ready in a couple of months.

“It would be great to start trying to ride a little bit by Christmas time. That’s the idea. By February, I’ll be at full speed ahead. But I’m going to try to ride as soon as I can.

“I still need a good two months to make sure it’s safe. I have the time, so I’m not going to overdo it.”

With no competitive meetings for many months, Hancock plans to rebuild the shoulder slowly.

He said: “I knew it was going to be a long recovery. It’s not like you can just go hard and make everything strong. You start with the small muscles and build up to a certain level, keeping your arms low on the body.

“After 10 to 12 weeks, you can start doing your exercises a little bit more above shoulder height and strengthen the hardcore muscles once everything has healed up fully.

“It doesn’t feel nearly like it did before. Obviously it’s still quite sore in some angles, but in general, it’s definitely stable now.”

Hancock had missed just one SGP event in 22 seasons prior to this year, so he was understandably keen to get back on track as fast as possible. But he accepts his bid to return to the shale this term proved a little over-optimistic.

He said: “The only chance I had was to strengthen the shoulder and try and finish the year off. The doctor said ‘that probably won’t happen, but you can try if you want.’ So I did and he was right!”
