GOLLOB CROWNED A SUPER CHAMPION

Polish great Tomasz Gollob was crowned a Super Champion at the prestigious Przeglad Sportowy awards in Warsaw last night.

Polish great Tomasz Gollob was crowned a Super Champion at the prestigious Przeglad Sportowy awards in Warsaw last night.

The 2010 world champion was handed the lifetime achievement award to recognise his unparalleled contribution to Polish speedway.

He was forced to retire due to serious spinal injuries earlier this year. But having been released from hospital in November, Gollob is slowly working his way back into the public eye and could seek a new role in the sport.

His efforts as a rider inspired generations of Poles to follow him on to the world stage. But Mr G remains Poland’s most naturally-gifted speedway hero, and one who achieved a level of fame few riders around the world have ever matched.

Gollob wasn’t the only speedway star celebrating as world No.2 Patryk Dudek finished sixth in the Sportsperson of the Year poll, which was won by ski jumping icon Kamil Stoch, who beat football star Robert Lewandowski.

Gorzow ace Bartosz Zmarzlik also made the shortlist after finishing fifth in the World Championship and winning the Swedish SGP in Malilla. He took 13th place in the vote.

Meanwhile, the 2017 World Games in Wroclaw, which saw Polish racers Maciej Janowski, Zmarzlik and Dudek win gold in a special pairs meeting at the Olympic Stadium, was crowned the nation’s sporting event of the year.
