Great Britain boss Alun Rossiter says he’d back moves to franchise the rights to the Lions team as he bids to take them to the next level.

It’s two years since the BSPA last sent the GB side on a winter training camp to Croatian track Gorican and the overseas test matches called for by senior riders over many years have not become a reality.

It is rumoured the BSPA is in talks with a company fronted by Rob Painter, who founded the Revolution Speedway team, with a view to handing over the rights to the national side.

If somebody can take the franchise on and move Great Britain forward, that’s great with me.

With BSPA funding limited, it’s hoped the franchisee will bring in the funds needed to help the Lions roar to their first world team title since 1989.

Rossiter would back a change of direction for GB. He said: “If somebody can take the franchise on and move Great Britain forward, that’s great with me.

“I can only do what I am told. The powers that be tell me ‘this is your budget and this is what you do.’

“Since I have been involved with it, I don’t think the Great Britain boys have been badly treated in any shape or form. Their expenses have all been covered. But if we have somebody who can take Great Britain forward, then all well and good.”

Even if the GB is taken over this year, Rossiter insists his place as team manager is secure. He said: “I have been put forward as the Great Britain manager for this year. I’m in place for 2018.”

Since taking charge for the 2014 season, Rossiter has led the Lions into three out of a possible four FIM Speedway World Cup Finals, winning silver in 2016. The Swindon chief is content with his record.

“I don’t feel I have done anything massively wrong,” Rossiter said. “I can only do so much.

“We do need to come in line with the other countries and I’m sure the companies that are speaking to the BSPA are fully aware of where we need to be and what we need to put in place.”

Rossiter believes some progress has been made, especially with riders’ fitness.

He said: “We have moved on massively from when we first started off back in 2014. It didn’t quite happen overnight how we wanted it to, but with coaches Paul Suggitt and Chris Neville involved, the guys are working hard.

“I get frustrated when people say ‘we’re not doing this and not doing that.’ The guys have taken the fitness training on board. They have been working closely with Paul since 2016. That’s mainly when it took off – when we went to Croatia.”
