BEN FUND BONANZA POSTPONED

British speedway’s first meeting of 2018, the Ben Fund Bonanza at Peterborough this Sunday, has been postponed.

13 / 03 / 2018, 17:18

British speedway’s first meeting of 2018, the Ben Fund Bonanza at Peterborough this Sunday, has been postponed.

The action has been called off at the earliest opportunity with organisers admitting defeat in their battle to prepare the East of England Showground track following recent periods of bad weather in the UK, with snow forecast for this weekend too.

Ben Fund treasurer Paul Ackroyd has confirmed the meeting will be restaged later in the season following the first postponement in its 10-year history.

He said: “We have had to call it off because the track is unfit, and can’t be made race-able in time due to the poor weather and the forecast of it worsening over the weekend, when we are told it will be cold and unpleasant.

“We are extremely disappointed of course but we have made the decision at an early stage to prevent inconvenience and to allow people to cancel any travel arrangements they have made.

“I feel for (Peterborough boss) Ged (Rathbone) and his staff and the Showground people, who have worked hard to prepare for the meeting.

“It will be restaged at some point and we will make that announcement at the earliest time possible.”

It’s unclear when the meeting will now take place, but the news comes as a huge blow after organisers attracted their strongest line-up for some years, featuring world champion Jason Doyle.
