02 / 01 / 2019, 11:53

Aussie international Nick Morris survived a tapes exclusion to book his place in the Australian Championship series.

The Wolverhampton man suffered the mishap in his third ride during Wednesday’s qualifier at Gillman, but still picked up nine points, ensuring him the top-eight finish he needed to line up in Thursday’s opening round at the Adelaide venue.

The qualifier was won by Leicester signing Ryan Douglas, who kicked off his 2019 with an impressive 14 points.

Redcar star Jordan Stewart was second on 13, with former Aussie Championship runner-up Justin Sedgmen second on 11.

Kye Thompson and Todd Kurtz made it through on 10, with Morris and Zach Cook joining them on nine.

The eighth and final berth went to Ben Cook, who pipped Josh Pickering on countback after they tied on eight. Cook got the verdict after coming out on top when they met in their opening ride.

Pickering will have to make do with the first reserve spot for the series, which launches at Gillman on Thursday, before heading to Victorian tracks Mildura on Saturday and Undera on Monday.

New venue Albury in New South Wales makes its Aussie Championship debut on Wednesday. The action concludes at Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Valley, NSW on January 12.

The qualifiers are joined in the series by seeded stars – 2012 world champion Chris Holder, defending champion Rohan Tungate, Max Fricke, Brady Kurtz, Jack Holder, Sam Masters, Jaimon Lidsey and Zane Keleher.
